Quang Ninh Museum is located at 165 Nguyen Van Cu, Halong City, Quang Ninh Province.

The museum features modern architecture and is located on an area of 1,500 sq.m and an open-air exhibition area and flower gardens.

The Quảng Ninh Museum was founded in 1960, under the original name of the Historical and Revolutionary Museum of Hồng Quang at 5B Cầu Cao, Hồng Gai Town (Ha Long City now). In 1964, the Hồng Quang Area was merged with Hai Ninh Province to form the new province of Quảng Ninh, and the museum took its new name following the merger.

During periods of war, all documents and artifacts from the museum were evacuated to various sites while the building of 5B Cầu Cao was leveled in the dust by bombing.

In 1990, People Committee of the province decided to build Quảng Ninh Museum at 165 Nguyễn Văn Cừ, Ha Long City (former place of Quảng Ninh Import and Export Company). The museum features modern architecture, and is located on an area of 1,500 sq.m, with an open-air exhibition area and flower gardens.

The northwest mountainous area has a lot of big rivers and streams in which have green mosses growing from reefs. Green mosses appear in November and December of lunar calendar in rivers and streams which are 0.4-1 meter deep.

Mosses in rivers or streams have long been an interested dish of many ethnic minority groups like Thai, H’ Mong, Muong, etc. Village patriarchs said that green mosses were also a useful medicine.

Together groping for green mosses is an interesting cultural feature of ethnic people of the northwest mountainous s area. In the gross crop, all people of a village temporarily stop their cultivation and together go to banks of big rivers or streams to pick mosses on good days. They use green mosses as reserved food and/or gifts for their relatives.

The way to process green mosses is similar in all minority groups. Mosses are put on large flat rocks. Then people use big bamboo and wood sticks to lash mosses and pick out gravel and grit before putting them in xa or khieng, which is like a flat basket, to wash until clean. Finally, clean mosses are kept with slight salt water for 10 to 15 minutes and then are washed again before being minced and mixed with spices to make the following dishes:

* Khay pho: Spices include garlic, onion, mac khen, ginger, chilli, fennel, minced lemon leaves and citronella bulb mixed with minced mosses which are added by an adequate quantity of salt. The mixture is then wrapped into phrynium or banana leaves, which is then buried into hot straw ashes that is surrounded by live coals for no less than 2 hours until the phrynium or banana leaves are dry.

* Khay pinh : After carrying out all processing steps as Khay Pho, people wrap ripe mosses into la lot or lemon leaves before gripping them in cleft bamboo sticks which are then grilled until ripe. Afterwards, people fry them by pig fat.

The old Communal House of Phu Le lies 40 kilometers by road from the Ben Tre Township toward the province’s seaside district. It is seen as a place of spiritual inspiration and worship by the local people.

Based on writings on remained stone stelae, historians have proved that the Phu Le Communal House was officially built under a directive by the Minh Mang King of the Nguyen Dynasty, issued on June 14, 1862.On April 14, 1896, the Communal House was first erected with very simple materials (thatched roof, wooden columns, board waffles, and laterite floorings) and on the land donated by Mr Le Van Sung. In 1923, the structure was renovated and became one the largecommunal houses of the province.

The Communal House is a house of 10 apartments, in which the 6 main apartments are built-in to the house roof, the rest 4 apartments are specially used as guest rooms and the kitchen.

In 1945, under the war threats, many worshiping and decorative objects were brought into hide by local people following a call by the management council. All brass instruments and tools were intended to be used in the “brass week” for making weaponry for used in the guerrilla war. Unfortunately, the intention was thwarted when the French colonial troops poured into the commune and occupied the Communal House. So the materials were also brought into hide.

After the war, only worshiping objects were returned to the Communal House and have been laid there until now. In 1972, the Communal House was again repaired due to war damages.

In 1950,the Communal House was again totally rebuilt on the same old ground base, with contributions from the commune’s people. The new Communal House was built with concrete walls, new roof tiling, and more new concrete columns. The main receptive hall was rebuilt with corrugated roof in 1967.

Phu Le is of high value thanks to not only the antique factor, but also its valuable artistic carving and engraving works and many other old-time decoratives made by craftmen from the Central Vietnam. Today, one of its halls was degraded and has never been able to paired due to lack of funding.

According to local elderly, the Communal House was used as a place of worship to the “Tutelary God”. Worshiping ceremonies are held twice a year, on the 18th and 19th days of the Third Lunar month, and on the 9th and 10th days of the Eleventh Lunar month. The Third Lunar month’s ceremony is called the Ky Yen (Pray for Peace), at which people pray to the God to bless for peace and good life. The Eleventh month’s ceremony is called the Cau Bong (Pray for Good Crops), which is asking for a good crop season to come.

Besides, there are other worshiping events at the Communal House on the main Mid-month occasions of the First, Seventh, the Tenth, and on July 27 every year. On such ocasions, local people, and some from other parts of the province, gather to the Communal House pray for whatever they wish to.

The ceremonies at the Communal House are also occasions for the whole community to come and share their life stories, to exchange information on various topics, from the very niches of their village life to even worldwide events. And, there is the indispensable nights of hat boi (a form of triditional drama).Though its original design and features have been largely damaged by the two wars in the past, and degraded through time, the Phu Le Communal House remains to be a symbol of the Vietnamese finest traditional morality: the loyalty of the people, the way of social living behaviour among the neighbourhoods.

So, visiting the Phu Le Communal House, tourists not only have chances to look at an artistic structure, but they also are able to sink themselves in the ancient and tranquil air of the House itself.

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is both a research centre and a public museum exhibiting the ethnic groups of Vietnam. The mission of the Museum is scientific research, collection, documentation, conservation, exhibition and preserving the cultural and historic patrimony of the nation’s different ethnic groups. The museum also serves to guide research, conservation, and technology that are specific to the work of an ethnographic museum.

The Museum is located in a large open area on Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Cau Giay District, about 8 km from the city centre. This area used to be paddy field of the local people. During the construction of the Museum, all of the infrastructure was built, including the 700m road from Hoang Quoc Viet Street to the entrance of the Museum. (In the near future, this road will reach the Daewoo Hotel, which is situated between Cau Giay and Lieu Giai Streets)

The Vietnamese Government first invested in the Museum in 1986 and construction of the foundation began in late 1989. According to the proposal, the total budget for construction was 27 billion of Vietnamese dong (US$ 1.9 million), not including 4 billion dong (US$ 285,000) for collecting and exhibiting the artefacts.
The exhibition building of the Museum was designed by the architect Ha Duc Linh, a Tay minority, who works for the Living Houses and Public Works Building Company, Ministry of Construction. The interior architecture was done by Mrs. Veronique Dollfus, a French architect.

The Museum is divided into two parts: an indoor and an outdoor exhibition. The indoor part is composed of the exhibition building, office, research centre, library, storage, technical lab and auditorium. These offices cover 2,480m2, including 750 m2 for storage of artefacts. The outdoor exhibition, which will be accomplished in the first years of the 21st century, is to highlight different types of houses in all parts of Vietnam. Pathways link the indoor and outdoor exhibitions with each other.

Since its inauguration on the occasion of the 7th Summit of Francophony in Hanoi, give date the Museum receives about 60,000 visitors annually.

It features a fascinating collection of art and everyday objects gathered from Vietnam and its diverse tribal people.

The museum has excellent maps and the displays are well labelled in Vietnamese, French and English. Interesting dioramas portray a typical village market, the making of conical hats and a Tay shamanic ceremony, while videos show the real life contexts. There are fabulous displays of weaving and fabric motifs. Visitors can also enter a traditional Black Thai house reconstructed within the museum, and there are outdoor exhibits in the landscaped grounds. A craft shop – affiliated with Craft Link, which is a fair trade organisation – sells books, beautiful postcards, and arts and crafts from ethnic communities.

The museum is quite a way from central Hanoi, but it shouldn’t be missed.
